DOT 2290 Filing
WHAT IS THE HEAVY VEHICLE USE TAX RETURN?
Tax form 2290 is a Federal Excise Tax for vehicles with a gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more that operate on public highways. These annual taxes contribute to the Highway Trust Fund, which helps pay for highway maintenance. You can determine the gross taxable weight of your vehicle by adding together:
- The vehicle’s actual unloaded weight once fully equipped for service
- The actual unloaded weight of any trailers or semi trailers used in conjunction with the vehicle that are fully equipped for service.
- The maximum load typically carried on the vehicle and any other trailers used in conjunction with the vehicle.
You can calculate the cost of your HVUT after calculating the weight of your truck. The tax begins at $100 for the first 55,000 pounds. Each additional 1,000 pounds incurs an additional tax of $22. The maximum taxable weight is 75,000 pounds, meaning that your maximum payment will be $550.
