FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is a DOT pre-employment drug test?
A DOT pre-employment drug test is a urine test required by the FMCSA before a CDL driver can perform safety-sensitive functions such as operating a commercial motor vehicle. The employer must receive a verified negative result before allowing the driver to begin work. The test screens for marijuana, cocaine, opiates, amphetamines, and PCP — the five drug classes mandated by DOT regulations.
How much does a pre-employment drug test cost?
At Vertical Identity, a DOT pre-employment drug test costs just $69. This includes the specimen collection at one of our 20,000+ nationwide testing locations, SAMHSA-certified laboratory analysis, and Medical Review Officer (MRO) review. Our consortium members get competitive pricing compared to the industry average of $100 or more.
Who needs a DOT pre-employment drug test?
Any driver required to hold a commercial driver’s license (CDL) must pass a pre-employment drug test before performing safety-sensitive duties. This includes truck drivers, bus drivers, and any employee who operates a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 pounds or more. Both interstate and intrastate CDL drivers are subject to this requirement — even if they only drive a few miles per week.
What happens if a driver fails a pre-employment drug test?
If a driver fails a DOT pre-employment drug test, the job offer is withdrawn and the violation is reported to the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse. The driver is immediately prohibited from performing safety-sensitive functions for any DOT-regulated employer. To drive again, the driver must complete the return-to-duty process, which includes evaluation by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP), treatment, and a negative return-to-duty drug test.
Is a Clearinghouse query required for pre-employment?
Yes. Employers must conduct a full query of the FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse on every driver before hiring. The driver must provide electronic consent for the full query through the Clearinghouse website. This check reveals any unresolved drug or alcohol violations from previous employers. Vertical Identity can handle Clearinghouse queries as part of your compliance program.
How long does it take to get pre-employment drug test results?
Most DOT pre-employment drug test results are available within 24 to 48 hours after the specimen is collected. Negative results are typically reported faster. If a specimen requires confirmation testing or MRO review (for example, if the donor has a valid prescription), results may take an additional 1-2 days. Vertical Identity notifies you as soon as results are verified.
